Mission
The New York State Board of Elections executes and enforces all laws relating to elections and oversees the disclosure of campaign financing and practices. The Board also strives to promote the full participation of the State's eligible voters and to maintain our citizen's confidence in the political process.
The Board is responsible for reviewing the practices of all 58 local boards of elections; regulating access to the ballot for State offices; approving voting systems for use within the State; maintaining the statewide voter registration database; disclosure and enforcement of campaign financing and practices; and implementing various Federal voting programs (i.e. Help America Vote Act, National Voter Registration Act, Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act).
Budget Highlights
The Executive Budget recommends $6.3 million All Funds ($5.3 million General Fund; $1 million All Other Funds) for the Board. The decrease of $216,000 in operating costs supported by the General Fund reflects the Board's planned move from leased to State-owned office space. While the absence of new Federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) funding results in a significant decrease of $7 million in recommended 2012-13 appropriations, Federal funds continue to be available through HAVA reappropriations to both the counties and the State to meet HAVA mandates.
The Executive Budget recommends a workforce of 58 FTEs, unchanged from the prior year.
